Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography (PET/CT)
This new technology reveals life-saving information after a single, quick exam by combining information about body function and structure into one complete image
For oncology patients, PET/CT provides critical information to help your physician accurately diagnose cancer, determine an effective treatment plan and monitor its success. For neurology patients, PET/CT provides an accurate positive diagnosis of the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. PET/CT also can distinguish dementias from Alzheimer’s due to the different patterns of metabolism.
On the day of your exam, you will receive an injection into a vein of a radioactive liquid. You will rest in the PET/CT suite for 45 minutes while the medication distributes throughout your body. You will be positioned on the scan table and it will move into a large opening. The PET/CT exam will take approximately 30 minutes. The exam is side-effect free. As with an X-ray, please inform the technologist if there is any possibility that you may be pregnant. The radiologist will interpret the images and a report will be sent to your doctor.
